The magestic ancient city of Albi , built with the red brick characteristic of the region, was never besieged by crusaders from the north. It lent its name to the “Albigensian Crusade” (a.k.a. the Cathar Crusade) because the Catholic Church wrongly believed it to be the centre of Catharism in the Languedoc. The Cathedral of Sainte Cécile is notable for its dominating defensive exterior and sumptuous interior.

Cordes sur Ciel: This well preserved bastide town, surrounded by vineyards and forest, received its charter from the Count of Toulouse in 1222 to shelter people displaced by the Cathar Crusade (it replaced the village of Saint-Marcel, which was destroyed by crusaders in 1215) and to encourage the region’s economic growth. It is known as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
